The Brooklyn Nets saga with star guard Kyrie Irving, who is unwilling to get the COVID-19 vaccine, took a big twist when it was announced that Irving would be able to play in road games for the franchise. Now, according to the NY Daily News, there is a way that the Nets star could play in Brooklyn without getting the vaccine.

Let me present the penalties for noncompliance with The Key to NYC, as outlined in Bill de Blasio’s executive order: First offense: Warning.

Second offense: $1,000 fine.

Third offense: $2,000 fine.

Fourth offense: $5,000 fine.

Fifth offense to infinity offenses: $5,000 fine.

Per Stefan Bondy of the NY Daily News, these are the penalties for noncompliance with New York State's vaccine mandate. The Nets, who have complied with such mandates to this point, could theoretically decide to have Kyrie Irving, who is still unlikely to get vaccinated, play in home games and pay the fines accrued as a result of that decision.

As Bondy points out, the small fines here are like loose change to Nets owner Joe Tsai, who could also stand to make some of that money back with Irving in the building for home games.

This is all just conjecture at this point, though it's something the Nets, who are second in the Eastern Conference largely without the services of Kyrie Irving, could consider doing in their quest for an NBA championship.
