It’s been months since Jeff Hornacek was handed his pink slip as head coach of the New York Knicks, but it seems he’s still around the New York basketball scene. According to Matthew Hochberg of Global Partnerships, Hornacek is spending these days with a consultancy job with the Brooklyn Nets.
Jeff Hornacek is consulting for the #Nets this season, per Jeff Hornacek. I ran into him at a brunch spot in Chicago last month w/ @samueles01, introduced myself and told him I used to work for Brooklyn. He said he’d be around the team this season.
Hornacek coached the Knicks for two full NBA seasons from 2016 to 2018 and in each of those campaigns, New York was not able to notch more than 31 wins. The team went 31-51 in the 2016-17 season then regressed the following year with a 29-53 slate, prompting the Knicks to fire Jeff Hornacek. In lieu of Hornacek, the Knicks hired former Memphis Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale.
As for Hornacek himself, he seems to be among the decision makers in Brooklyn, currently coached by Kenny Atkinson.
The Nets are still in a rebuilding phase and though they did not sign any key free agents in the summer, they are in the position to land one next year. Atkinson has done as fine of a job as anyone could under the team’s circumstances and he and general manager Sean Marks are hoping that Jeff Hornacek will contribute to Brooklyn’s success in the future.
Hornacek has a 161-216 record as a head coach in the NBA.
