The Brooklyn Nets might have a lone shining spot in this 21-46 season, a diamond found in the rough in the form of Spencer Dinwiddie, an outlier that was supposed to be a fill-in for Jeremy Lin after his season-ending injury, but one that turned into one of the most promising talents in the franchise.

Dinwiddie is making his case for the Most Improved Player award after being waived by the Chicago Bulls twice last season, becoming a staple in the Nets lineup, having started 56 of his 66 games played through the season.

His 4.4 assist-to-turnover ratio leads the league this season, dishing a hair shy of seven per game, as it stands — the best mark for a point guard since Chris Paul in 2014-15.

While the Nets traded for D'Angelo Russell in a splashy trade for their franchise-leading scorer Brook Lopez, it was Dinwiddie who has proved himself as a natural floor general only a year after starting the season in the G League.

His 13 points and 6.9 assists coming out of a hulking 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame at the position has given him a legitimate chance for a rags to riches story.

The Nets point man ranks 12th in the league in clutch scoring, and while Russell's return from injury has given his minutes a hit, Dinwiddie has been averaging 8.5 assists and only 1.7 turnovers per game.

He made his next step into the spotlight, winning this year's Skills Challenge competition during the All-Star Weekend, making him familiar with hardware he could soon receive as one of the G League's surprising products.
