The Brooklyn Nets-Philadelphia 76ers blockbuster trade features more than just James Harden and Ben Simmons. The Sixers' 2022 NBA Draft capital is in the hands of the Nets, who have the option to take the Sixers' 23rd overall selection or wait until next year.

According to PhillyVoice's Kyle Neubeck, the Nets are expected to defer the Sixers draft pick.

But there was an important catch for the 2022 pick — Brooklyn has the right to defer that pick until 2023, and has until June 1st to make a decision. After the Sixers won a three-way tiebreaker over the Bucks and Celtics to get pick No. 23 this year, that seemed like a relatively decent outcome the Nets would roll with.

Just over a week out from the deadline, I've been told it's relatively likely the Nets will opt to defer that pick to next season…

This decision somewhat makes sense for the Nets, who have plenty of young players to try to develop. Cam Thomas, Kessler Edwards, David Duke Jr. and Day'Ron Sharpe were all rookies last year. Giving them another year to develop would give the team a clearer picture of what their future needs will be. If the days of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn are truly numbered, this is extra important.

For the Sixers, this decision is huge. They now have a draft pick that they can use to find another solid player. The downside is that it limits the trades they are able to make. The Sixers would not be able to move any of their first-rounders until 2029 because of prior trades but could trade their 2023 NBA Draft pick later in the offseason if Brooklyn takes this year's pick. Still, they will get the chance to find a solid, young player.
