Adam Silver is seen to be a progressive NBA commissioner, open to trying new ideas and taking the league in any direction he sees beneficial. This has been made apparent by his interest in advertising on jerseys and his open minded approach to sports betting.

As Silver’s reign continues, a new development is upon us. The league will debut a new timing system, which features a new shot clock, during the Summer League in Las Vegas this week. This will be done with the view of having it eventually put into place in all NBA arenas in the upcoming season.

The new shot clock will feature the game, twenty four second, and timeout clocks, all within the same piece of hardware. It has been developed by Tissot, who serve as the league’s official timekeeper.

Having a new system to work with is seen to be beneficial to referees and officials of the league. It allows for clearer footage for the Replay Center too. The new clock appears almost transparent during game-time, which means it will not obscure fan’s views from behind the court.

This, whilst perhaps a small detail for some, is a move forward for a league that debuted the NBA shot clock in 1954.
