It has been deemed a foregone conclusion that the Cincinnati Bengals will take LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. It appears the Detroit Lins and Miami Dolphins already have their eye on the next-best option in Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
The Lions currently own the No. 3 spot in the upcoming draft while the Dolphins are slotted at No. 5. The oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook currently have them as co-favorites to take Tagovailoa, via ESPN's David Pardum:
Caesars has the Lions and Dolphins as co-favorites at -110 to land Tagovailoa, who is recovering from a hip injury he suffered in mid-November.
The prospect of Miami hoping to land Tua Tagovailoa should hardly come as a surprise. Although quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to show that he still has some gas left in the tank, they are still in need of a long-term option since it backup quarterback Josh Rosen has failed to make waves in his new home.
Of course, the most intriguing aspect is the fact that the odds have Detroit right there with them. this would indicate that they are ready to make an investment to secure a successor for quarterback Matthew Stafford. General manager Bob Quinn has done what he can to downplay the notion of Stafford being shopped this offseason, however, it does not seem to be too far-fetched.
If there is any truth to the Lions being ready to usher in a new era under center in the near future, then the Dolphins will likely need to try and trade up if they hope to land Tagovailoa.
