Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's still too early and “impossible to call” if NFL and college football might happen this year. Fauci did an exclusive interview with SportsIllustrated.com’s ‘Jets Country’ to talk about the COVID-19 pandemic and what things might need to happen for a season to happen.

Last week Fauci said it's hard to imagine football will happen without it being a bubble, but he said those comments were taken a bit out of context. Fauci said no matter what he says, he isn't the one that is going to make that decision, it's the NFL that will decide if games are played.

“My statements about the NFL season have been misinterpreted and taken out of context,” Fauci said. “I was asked by officials from the NFL about risks associated with various scenarios that the NFL might face in consideration of the upcoming season. I provided advice from a public health standpoint. The ultimate decision is not mine but that of the officials of the NFL and the players themselves.”

Fauci did say the one thing that he would like to happen before the NFL season, even if he has no say is for the cases to decrease and for there to be proof that a resurgence isn't happening.

“Optimally you would want to see the level of infection dramatically decreased and good control of any evidence of resurgence. Again, the officials of the league in consultation with the players will make their own decisions.”

It's still a couple of months away, which is too far away for Fauci to make a call on if he believes football should happen.
