Former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots star quarterback Cam Newton remains a free agent this NFL offseason. No team has seen fit to sign the former MVP, especially after a less-than-stellar campaign with the Panthers in 2021. During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast, a radio show run by Joe Person of The Athletic, Newton set the record straight on his recent tenures with the Panthers and Patriots, per Pro Football Talk.

“Carolina, I put myself in another fucked up situation,” Newton said on The Pivot Podcast (via Joe Person of TheAthletic.com). “I was signed on Thursday, I played on Sunday. At what point did you think you was gonna be successful? That next week, I started. That’s still up under 10 days of you being on the team, and you’re still trying to learn an offense. . . . So before I sit up here and allow the narrative to be made that Cam ain’t got it no more, Cam is taking full responsibility and saying that Cam put himself in a fucked up situation.”

Newton said that he “put himself in another f****** up situation”, citing the Panthers' signing and subsequent starting of him in 2021. The former NFL MVP does have a point.

Newton flashed his ability at times with the Patriots before he tested positive for COVID-19, which seemed to affect his play down the stretch.

Then, as the 33-year-old said, he was signed by the Panthers on a Thursday, and required to start that next Sunday. Newton spoke about the lack of time he had to learn the offense.

While that very well could have been an issue in Carolina, it certainly wasn't in New England. The fact of the matter is, if NFL teams were really interested in Newton, they would have signed him by now.

It doesn't mean that his career is over. It does mean that Newton might have to accept that his best days are behind him.
