Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is currently an unrestricted free agent after the NFC South franchise decided to head in a completely different direction earlier this offseason. As a result, the former league MVP continues to search for his next NFL home as starting jobs from around the league continue to fill up as the days go by.

Even so, Newton has at least one supporter in his corner as his former college head coach, Gus Malzahn of Auburn, knows that the longtime Panthers signal-caller now really has something to prove.

“I’ve seen that look before,” Malzahn recently told Mike Tirico on NBCSN’s Lunch Talk Live, via NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk. “He’s got something to prove, he’s determined. Whoever gets him better buckle up.”

As a whole, the NFC South landscape — especially in regards to quarterbacks — changed quickly and in a big way this offseason. With Newton now a free agent after leading the Panthers for so many years, Carolina has since turned to former New Orleans Saints backup Teddy Bridgewater as its solution under center. Not only that, but former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is the new backup to Drew Brees in New Orleans with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady notably heading south from the New England Patriots to join head coach Bruce Arians in Florida in favor of the aforementioned Winston.

As it stands today, there seem to be very few suitors for Newton as it appears as though the former Heisman Trophy winner and former No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick still wants to start in 2020.
