Clay Matthews may not be playing in Denver this season, but that doesn’t mean he’s planning to sit out entirely.

Contrary to earlier reports, Matthews remains open to returning in 2020.

In a statement by Matthews’ agent Ryan Williams to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the 34-year-old linebacker remains open to playing this season given the right opportunity. The statement acknowledges that Matthews has communicated with the Broncos, who are looking to replace linebacker Von Miller, who suffered an ankle injury that will require surgery and will sideline him for an extended period of time. The statement also adds that Matthews was unaware that his conversations with the Broncos would remain private.

Matthews, who spent the first decade of his career with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Los Angeles Rams last season, won a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and earned six Pro Bowl selections. He finished the 2019 season with 27 tackles eight sacks, and two forced fumbles in 13 games for the Rams, which failed to reach the playoffs.

Los Angeles cut Matthews earlier in the offseason, and he filed a grievance against the Rams for unpaid money back in April. The Rams still owe him $2 million of guaranteed roster bonuses, but offsets were included, per Pro Football Talk, and any deal he signs with another team like the Broncos could offset part of that bonus.

If Clay Matthews doesn’t consider playing for Denver, his statement indicated that other teams were interested in acquiring his services, with the Seattle Seahawks expressing interest in the linebacker last month.
