Jon Gruden is typically considered a smart “football guy.” He was a great coach during his last stint in the NFL, and as a commentator for the last few years, it is safe to assume he has his finger on the pulse of the league. So, when he talks about an issue like Colin Kaepernick’s employment status, it is easy to assume he knows something the rest of us do not.

Or does he? Are are his recent comments to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez about Kaepernick:

“I think there’s a lot of intrigue there. His performance on the field wasn’t very good, on tape. I think, Robert Griffin, a rookie of the year, surprised he’s out there. Tim Tebow, takes a team to the playoffs, there’s some surprise that he never came back. You know, Johnny Manziel, he’s out there.

“Back to Kaepernick, you know he got beat out by [Blaine] Gabbert, to start the [2016] season. I think that says something. [But] I am surprised he’s not in camp with somebody. He probably will be soon.”

The chances of anyone inviting him to camp are slim to none because of his collusion case working its way through the legal system. While many praise Kaepernick’s skill set, there are just as many who do not think he is a good NFL quarterback.

No one wanted the media scrutiny that came with Tim Tebow, and while different, something along those lines would come for any franchise that signs Kaepernick. No owner wants to antagonize a section of their fanbase.
