The NFL has announced that they will air three games on Christmas Day in 2022, per B/R Gridiron and John Breech.

As stated in the tweet, this will be the first occurrence in NFL history of three games on Christmas Day. Thanksgiving has been a longtime annual tradition, as the league does very well ratings-wise on that holiday.

It'll be interesting to see how their ratings do on Christmas Day, as the NBA always has five games annually. The NBA's games typically air on ESPN and ABC. There wasn't an NFL Christmas Day regular season game until 1989, as it's become a bit more common over the last few years. The only other instance before that were the two playoff games that took place in 1971.

There's been at least one Christmas Day game in four of the last six years, including two in 2021. In specific, the Browns-Packers nightcap averaged 28.59 million viewers. In the past, those games have ranged from being on NBC and FOX to the NFL Network and even ESPN. The NFL's games in year's past didn't seem to have too much of an impact on the NBA, although we'll have to see how things shake out in 2022.

It remains unclear as to just what the games will be for the NFL. It's also unknown whether this will become an annual tradition or just a one-year thing. Regardless, who can complain about football on Christmas? Maybe the NBA, but let's just hope the Detroit Lions aren't a regular on Christmas Day.
