Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees running away as MVP favorites

Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees

Through the first 10 weeks of the season, there have been several players putting together standout seasons that have elevated them squarely into the picture to earn the NLF MVP award.

For the vast majority, it has seen Kansas City Chiefs second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the top betting favorite to earn the honor. However, BetOnline.ag has placed both Mahomes and New Orleans Saint star quarterback Drew Brees as the two top choices to earn the prestigious honor.

Mahomes has had far away the most surprising campaign through the first 10 weeks as he has far exceeded the public expectation for him in his first year as the full-time starter for the Chiefs in place of Alex Smith. He has been the orchestrator of one of the league’s best offenses that is currently second in the league with 35.3 points per game along with being fourth in passing.

The 23-year-old is also leading the NFL with 3,150 passing yards and 31 touchdown passes, and second with a 117.4 passer rating. Mahomes is currently on pace to throw for 5,040 yards along with 50 touchdown passes. He already holds the franchise single-season record with 31 touchdown passes.

Meanwhile, Brees has continued to rack up an impressive campaign despite being in his 18th season in the league as he’s currently eighth in the league with 2,601 passing yards, first with a 77.5 percent completion rate, fourth with 21 touchdown passes, and first with a 123.8 passer rating. The 39-year-old has really gained ground in the MVP race after his strong performances over the last couple of weeks that include toppling the then-undefeated Los Angeles Rams 45-35 after throwing for 346 passing yards with four touchdowns.

It has essentially become a two-horse race, but it shouldn’t discount the phenomenal season that Rams star running back Todd Gurley has continued to put together currently leading the NFL with 988 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns along with 40 receptions for 402 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He is currently on pace for 2,200 total scrimmage yards and 27 total touchdowns. Ultimately, all of this makes for what should be an exciting second half of the season.
