Amukamara will join a Cardinals defense that desperately needs depth in the wake of a few injuries. The Cardinals were already on the prowl for another veteran cornerback after losing Robert Alford during training camp to a torn pectoral muscle that required season-ending surgery. It was the second consecutive season for Alford that he'd miss the entirety of the year due to an injury sustained in training camp.
Article Continues BelowAmukamara will bring a championship pedigree to the Cardinals, winning his first Super Bowl during his rookie year with the New York Giants. After several years with the Giants following a few stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears, Amukamara became a free agent. He will be able to bring decent depth at the cornerback position.
Cardinals defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick has been solid at the cornerback position so far through Week 4. He's totaled up a total of 14 tackles, 12 of which were solo tackles. The second-year back Byron Murphy has had 10 tackles so far into the season. He's coming off a 2019 season in which he totaled 78 tackles along with one interception.
Amukamara likely won't suit up in Week 5 upon signing, but should be available for action in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals in the meantime will have to make do with the defensive talent they currently have. They'll travel to MetLife Stadium to take on the winless New York Jets on Sunday, a team that should pose little to no challenge for the short-handed Cardinals.
