Since Steve Sarkisian took over the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, there has been a notable dip in the offensive production. It has subsequently brought attention to whether Sarkisian is the right long-term answer at the position for the franchise.
During a recent interview with The Wake Up Call on ESPN Charlotte radio, D Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution voiced that the 44-year-old's job figures to be on the line this upcoming season if the Falcons experience similar offensive struggles. Ledbetter suggests a ‘change will have to be in order' if the offense again struggles, especially considering the addition of Calvin Ridley.”
The Falcons were able to reach the playoffs and get to the divisional round, but the team wasn't the same explosive offensive unit it was the year prior. There hadn't been much change to the roster that would see them make the significant drop in effectiveness in their first year under Sarkisian from Kyle Shanahan. Atlanta went from first in the league in scoring (33.8 points per game) to 15th (22.1) and second in yards per game (415.8) to eighth (364.8).
What was also quite notable is that star wide receiver Julio Jones struggled to be a huge factor in the red zone that he has typically been throughout his career. All of this has seemingly shifted a tremendous weight of expectations onto Sarkisian to better fine-tune his offensive game. This is more the case with the addition of one of the top wide receivers in this year's draft in former Alabama standout wideout Calvin Ridley.
Simply put, the pressure is on Sarkisian to get the Falcons back on the right page offensively to being one of the powerhouse teams in the league.
