Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Bengals made the surprising decision to bring back head coach Marvin Lewis on a two-year extension.
The 59-year-old has experienced much success in the regular season, but he has notably fallen short in the playoffs, failing to capture a win any of his seven playoff appearances. As Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk discovered, there are 39 other head coaches who have won playoff games since he joined Cincinnati back in 2003.
Article Continues BelowHere’s the complete list of coaches who have won a playoff game since Lewis got the Cincinnati job:
Bruce Arians, Bill Belichick, Jim Caldwell, Pete Carroll, Brad Childress, Tom Coughlin, Bill Cowher, Jack Del Rio, Tony Dungy, Herm Edwards, Jeff Fisher, John Fox, Jason Garrett, Joe Gibbs, Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Mike Holmgren, Gary Kubiak, Mike Martz, Mike McCarthy, Mike McCoy, Jim Mora Jr., Bill O’Brien, Chuck Pagano, Sean Payton, Wade Phillips, Dan Quinn, Andy Reid, Ron Rivera, Rex Ryan, Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan, Mike Sherman, Lovie Smith, Mike Smith, Mike Tice, Mike Tomlin, Norv Turner and Ken Whisenhunt.
This long list will get longer during the wild card round this upcoming weekend, with either the Buffalo Bills' Sean McDermott or the Jacksonville Jaguars' Doug Marrone joining this group. That number could jump up as high as 42 if both the Tennessee Titans' Mike Mularkey and the Los Angeles Rams' Sean McVay see their teams grab wins on Saturday.
The Philadelphia Eagles' Doug Pederson and Minnesota Vikings' Mike Zimmer are both searching for their first playoff wins in the divisional round following byes, meaning the number could swell to as high as 44 this postseason. This further illustrates Lewis' lack of playoff success with the Bengals despite some promising regular seasons.
With Cincinnati committed to Lewis for at least two more years, he has a couple more shots to get this monkey off his back.
