John Elway has narrowed down his Broncos head coach choices to two contenders.
According to Mike Klis of 9News.com, Elway is set to choose between Vic Fangio and Mike Munchak later this week. Regardless of which he chooses, the Broncos will have the oldest general manager-head coach pairing in the NFL (Elway is 58, whereas Fangio is 60, and Munchak is 58).
These same reports suggest that Fangio, and not Munchak, is more favored for the head coaching position — which is an unusual suggestion, given that Fangio has had no head coaching experience on the high school, college, or professional level.
Article Continues BelowMunchak, who is himself a former professional football player who got his start as a Houston Oilers first-round draft pick, has — as of late — been making a name for himself as the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to his tenure with the Steelers, he served with the Oilers from 1994, one year after he retired as a player. He stayed with the Oilers from their time in Houston, all the way through their time they moved to Tennessee, and even with their name change to the Titans. In 2011, he began serving as head coach of the then newly-christened Tennessee Titans, where he stayed until 2014.
Vic Fangio, meanwhile, is best known for his time as the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and Stanford Cardinals, linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens and defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Carolina Panthers.
