The Buffalo Bills want to make one thing clear: there is no quarterback controversy. Despite the Bills' fifth-round draft selection of Jake Fromm, the organization has no intention of replacing Josh Allen with Fromm.
General manager Brandon Beane set the record straight for why that is the case. He also explains why the Bills even bothered drafting Fromm in the first place.
Via ESPN (transcribed by Nick Wojton of Bills Wire):
“No, there’s no message at all,” Beane said. “We believe in Josh.
“That’s been the whole goal, to add weapons. We didn’t score enough points last year and that starts with me. Giving him and [offensive coordinator] Brian Daboll as much, as many weapons as we can. Adding Fromm was just… a guy that we had on our board that we really thought had a great college career and he’s very smart. He’ll add to the competition to backup Josh, but Josh is our entrenched starter.”
Allen has served as the team's starting quarterback over the past two seasons since he was selected with the seventh pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He managed to lead the team to the postseason last season with a 10-6 record. It was the franchise's best record since the 1999 season when they posted an 11-5 record.
Considering Allen is just 23 years of age and is actually coming off of a strong season, there's no reason to believe a change will happen this season. Fromm is simply there for insurance purposes and to obviously set up the franchise with a suitable backup for the near future.
However, if Allen does falter this season and heading into next, Fromm could prove to be an option if Buffalo wants to head in that direction.
