The Buffalo Bills made quite the investment when they traded up to select quarterback Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, it appears they do not feel inclined to throw too much at the rookie right away.
Instead, it seems they would rather take their time with Allen's progression. According to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW. head coach Sean McDermott indicated that the Bills will not rush his development.
Bills HC Sean McDermott on the pace that they’re bringing along QB Josh Allen: “Calculated.” Also said, “We’re not rushing this.”
McDermott's comments hardly come as any surprise. They are indicative of what other head coaches have said about the quarterbacks they took in the first round of this year's draft. However, there is still plenty of speculation regarding what this could mean for Allen in terms of becoming the starter.
The rookie has reportedly performed well in camp thus far. As with any quarterback taken early in the first round, Allen is expected to make an immediate impact for a Bills team that is coming off their first playoff appearance in two decades. While it may not be fair to place this kind of pressure on a rookie, it may be well-warranted in this situation.
Allen is currently battling two backup quarterbacks for the starting job in AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman. McCarron is still looking for a fresh start after a tumultuous 2017 campaign with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Meanwhile, Peterman has done little to prove he has bounced back from the disastrous start to his career. That said, it will be interesting to see how McDermott approaches the quarterback situation by the time the 2018 NFL season starts.
