The Buffalo Bills have given quarterback Josh Allen the full rookie treatment throughout the NFL offseason thus far. It appears that will not be changing any time soon.

Allen had been taking third-teams reps on offense during offseason training activities. Head coach Sean McDermott says he will remain there for the start of training camp, via Twitter.

“We’re going to pick up where we left from OTAs at the QB position. Josh Allen will work with the 3s as we start training camp tonight.”

It goes without saying that Buffalo has invested in Allen has their potential franchise quarterback. They even made a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in order to acquire him with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, it seems that McDermott plans to take his time with the rookie's development.'

Buffalo made it so that they would have a bit of a position battle brewing under center this offseason. The Bills signed former Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback AJ McCarron to the squad this year. They also decided to keep quarterback Nathan Peterman round to make things interesting. Allen's current status means that McCarron and Peterman are currently dueling it out for reps with the first team.

Some may find McDermott's approach a bit concerning. Quarterbacks taken early in the first round are usually expected to make an immediate impact on the team. That said, it should not be too difficult for Allen to beat out a couple of career backup quarterbacks. The fact that he is not even getting reps with the starters raises some questions. However, it seems McDermott is looking to make the rookie work his way up to the first team rather than just let him go right off the bat.
