Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen did not have a great stat line in his team's season opener on Sunday afternoon, completing 24 of his 37 passes for 254 yards, a touchdown and a couple of interceptions.
But when it mattered most, Allen got the job done in a 17-16 comeback win over the New York Jets on the road.
After the game, Bills head coach Sean McDermott praised Allen's performance:
“You always want to say you’ve done it one time, right? To bring a team back, not only at home, but also on the road, a division opponent,” McDermott said, according to Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com. “I think that’s a resume builder if you will, right? To be able to look at yourself and say ‘I brought a team back from behind on the road.'”
It also marked the first time in Allen's career that he threw for over 250 yards passing.
Buffalo trailed 16-0 in the second half and entered the fourth quarter behind 16-3, but thanks to a lights-out defensive performance down the stretch and some big-time throws from Allen, the Bills came away with a pivotal Week 1 victory.
It was a significant outing for Allen, who was selected by Buffalo with the seventh overall pick last year but struggled during his rookie campaign, throwing for just 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 52.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 67.9 over 11 starts.
The 23-year-old showed some significant growth on Sunday, and the Bills hope to take that with them next week when they take on the New York Giants in the very same building at MetLife Stadium.
