Cam Newton's return to the Carolina Panthers had a comeback storyline written all over it. So far, that has not been the case. Newton has struggled under center for the Panthers, to the point where Matt Rhule has opted to go with a platoon at quarterback. His performance against the Falcons was less than inspiring, and when discussing his two costly turnovers in the loss, Newton's statement should have Panthers fans worried.

Via David Newton, the Panthers QB admitted he didn't even see the defender on his interception, and that he should have killed the play on which he fumbled after getting his foot stepped on.

Newton's interception was extremely costly, with Falcons defender Mykal Walker snatching the throw out of the air and returning it 66 yards for an Atlanta touchdown. Newton was replaced by P.J. Walker after that drive, who threw an interception before the conclusion of the first half.

Newton then returned to the field in the second half, as part of Rhule's bizarre platoon, but fumbled the football on just his second drive back, resulting in a loss of possession and a subsequent Falcons touchdown.

On the evening, Newton completed 15-of-23 pass attempts for 178 yards and an interception. He rushed 10 times for 47 yards and a touchdown, but also had the costly fumble. As for Walker, the backup went 6-for-12 through the air for 75 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The loss sees the Panthers fall to 5-8 on the year, losers of three straight and eight of their last 10 games.
