Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is coming off a bit of a down year. Regardless, it is clear that he still garners plenty of respect as a top-tier quarterback around the league.
New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan has established himself as one of the NFL's premier pass-rushers in recent years. Even he admitted during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd that Newton is a hard man to bring down:
“He can shrug you off, he can outrun you, he can then as he's falling sling a 60 yard – accurate – ball,” said Jordan. “He's as strong as Ben Roethlisberger. He's got accuracy like any other top-tier quarterback. And of course, he can outrun you more than Russell Wilson can.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Jordan's comments. Newton's rare combination of size and athleticism makes him one of the most talented players in the NFL. It seems that not even a lingering shoulder injury guarantees that he will be brought down easily.
Despite his struggles in the 2018 campaign, there is no question that Newton is still a force to be reckoned with. The Panthers have now put the league on notice that he is on the fast track toward being 100 percent healthy for the start of the 2019 NFL season. As a result, Carolina has generated plenty of hype for a potential resurgence moving forward.
Either way, it is safe to say that a healthy Newton will make defenders think twice about their approach when attempting to sack him.
