The Carolina Panthers have fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey, per a statement posted on the team’s official website.

Shula spent the past seven seasons with Carolina, working as quarterbacks coach for two seasons before becoming offensive coordinator in 2013. He had spent 21 years as an NFL assistant with stops in Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Miami, and Chicago prior to getting the Panthers’ offensive coordinator job.

Under Shula’s leadership, the Panthers finished 19th in total offense (323.7), fourth in rushing offense (131.4), 28th in passing (192.3) and 12th in points (22.7) in the 2017 season.

As for Dorsey, he spent the last five seasons as the Panthers’ quarterbacks coach after two years as a pro scout. A star quarterback for the University of Miami (FL) in college, Dorsey had an undistinguished seven-year playing career in the NFL and CFL before transitioning to coaching.

The Panthers were consistently one of the best rushing teams in the league under Shula. However, he and Dorsey were unable to get that type of consistent production out of Newton and the passing game. Carolina finished 21st or lower in passing yards in each of the last five seasons, while Newton has regressed badly as a passer in the two seasons since he won the NFL MVP award.

This offseason is shaping up to be one that may result in insignificant change for the Panthers. Apart from the shakeup on offense, the Panthers could also lose defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who is set to interview for vacant head coaching jobs.
