The Carolina Panthers' offseason took a turn for the worst on Friday when one of their players made the news for all of the wrong reasons. This Panthers receiver was arrested for gun and drug charges, as reported by ESPN's David Newton.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Shi Smith was arrested Friday on charges of possession of an unlawful handgun and a narcotic with intent to distribute, according to Union County, South Carolina, records.
Panthers receiver Shi Smith was arrested for two charges, unlawful possession of a handgun and a narcotic with intent to distribute. ESPN reports that Smith was released on $5,000 bond for the drug charge and a $1,000 bond on the gun charge.
Article Continues BelowSmith was believed to be in the possession of marijuana. He was also speeding during the time of the incident. The Panthers are aware of the situation but declined to comment.
The 23-year-old was drafted in the sixth round of last year's draft out of South Carolina. He appeared in just six games for the Panthers, as he dealt with a nagging shoulder injury that he suffered during the preseason. Smith totaled six catches for 104 receiving yards.
He is due to appear in court for the first time in June.
