The Carolina Panthers are making a switch heading into Week 17 – Sam Darnold is their starting quarterback.
The Panthers stuck with Cam Newton as their QB1 in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers until he quickly gave up an interception on just the team's second drive of the game. Then Darnold entered the game and played the majority of remaining snaps.
Darnold, when asked on what the future holds for him amid the current timeshare with Cam Newton, claimed he had his sights set on the task at hand.

“I’m really focused on this week, to be completely honest with you,” said the Panthers QB. “I’m focused on New Orleans and focusing on what we can do to win this ball game on Sunday.”
“If I look past this game at all, I would be doing this team and myself a disservice by looking too far in the future. I don’t want to do that. I want to put my best football forward for this team so that we can go out and win this Sunday. If I go out and start to worry about what these next couple of games mean and what the implications are for next year, that does nothing for me on Sunday.”
The sentiment coming from the Panthers has seemed to lean towards Sam Darnold over Cam Newton as his return loomed. Newton just hasn't been able to find success on the field, going winless in his five starts with the squad. While the jury is still out on which QB gets the job for next season, Sam Darnold's already guaranteed deal worth $18 million could force Carolina to sway toward his direction.
