At one point during the 2017 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs were widely considered to be the best team in the league. Veteran quarterback Alex Smith had the team playing at a very high level with Super Bowl aspirations.

After a loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 12, the Chiefs are holding out hope of winning the AFC West division title let alone the Super Bowl. Of course, with losing always comes the question of the quarterback situation in Kansas City as rookie Patrick Mahomes awaits his shot to be the starter under center. Head coach Andy Reid, however, isn't ready to make that switch, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher.

Andy Reid said he never considered replacing quarterback Alex Smith with rookie Patrick Mahomes II during Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills and wouldn't make a change for next week's game against the New York Jets.

The loss to the Bills was the team's fifth of the season and third straight. Smith and company have struggled to reclaim their form from earlier in the season when they won five in a row to start the 2017 campaign against some playoff-caliber teams in the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans.

Now it appears the playoff are getting more and more out of reach for the struggling Chiefs with the team having lost five out of their last six games. The once-potent offense has been humbled, and there's no telling whether the team will get their spark back on that side of the football in time to clinch a playoff spot.

As for Smith, the veteran quarterback admitted earlier this season that this will probably be his last year in Kansas City. The 33-year-old sees the writing on the wall with Mahomes behind him and knows there's a good chance the team could move on. The Chiefs could very well take that step toward Mahomes if the team continues to struggle this season.
