The NFL is just two weeks deep into the season, but the Kansas City Chiefs are already laying out plans for trading starting quarterback Alex Smith at the end of the 2016-17 campaign. This is according to sources of ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who has reported of such rumors from Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to listen to trade offers for quarterback Alex Smith after this season, according to league sources.

When the Chiefs drafted ex-Texas Tech Red Raider gunslinger Patrick Mahomes in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, it was assumed by many that it was part of Kansas City’s preparation for a possible split with Smith sometime soon.

Smith’s current contract with Kansas City will expire at the end of the 2018 NFL season, so the Chiefs could be being prudent in exploring trade options for Smith while the 33-year-old quarterback still has value.

Speaking of value, Smith’s stock has been on the rise this season following two solid games to kick off the season. So far, Smith has passed for 368 yards with four touchdowns without an interception in leading the Chiefs to a 2-0 record.

Smith could hope to attract plenty of attention from quarterback-needy teams if Kansas City did put him on the trade block.
