Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is one of the most covered figures in the NFL. He's bold. He's brash. He's talented. He is essentially a media outlet's dream.
But with all of that bravado comes a fine line that Mayfield needs to be careful not to cross, as he is no longer playing in college but is dealing with a bunch of grown men in the pros.
Still, Mayfield doesn't see himself ever changing who he is:
“I probably won’t ever change. That’s just me,” Mayfield told Zach Frydenlund of Complex. “I mean, there’s growing up and lessons you learn throughout life, but you know, I’m always going to be who I am and enjoy that. And that’s the great part of being in Cleveland and having Emily as my wife is they know who I am. I don’t have to try and be anything other than truly myself.”
Mayfield went on to say that what he has done has worked so far:
“I’ve always been myself—not trying to be anybody else—and what I’ve done my whole life has gotten me here,” he said. “There’s obviously improvements and things I have to work on every day. But how I handle myself and how I approach it, that can’t change.”
Obviously, Mayfield being real and authentic is a great thing, and a big reason why he didn't get along with former Browns head coach Hue Jackson was because he felt Jackson was “fake.”
That being said, when it comes to berating your teammates on the field, there does come a point where you need to try to rein yourself in and understand you might be causing problems.
Fortunately, Mayfield hasn't really had to deal with any of those issues yet, but it will be interesting to see how his teammates handle his personality this coming season.
