Times are tough in Cleveland. The Browns were expected by many to be Super Bowl contenders coming into this season, but instead, they are just 2-5 through eight weeks, and frustrations are naturally starting to boil over.
On Wednesday, quarterback Baker Mayfield got into a heated exchange with a reporter and stormed out of the press conference, saying the reporter asked the “dumbest question you could ask.”
Afterward, Mayfield took to Twitter to defend himself.
“Everybody wants to hear the truth until they actually get it…. I am who I am and always have been,” wrote Mayfield. “Don’t call it emotional when it’s convenient and then passion when it fits. I care about winning, so yeah I’m frustrated. If I was to act like it’s okay to lose, then y’all would say that I’ve gotten complacent. My sense of urgency is at an all time high. And if I offend anybody along the way… that’s too bad.”
Thanks to an offseason in which Cleveland added Odell Beckham Jr., Kareem Hunt (who has yet to play due to a suspension) and numerous players on the defensive side of the ball, expectations were high for the Browns for the first time in a long while.
However, Cleveland has yet to prove it can even avoid penalties, as it was flagged 13 times during its loss to the New England Patriots last Sunday and is averaging 10 penalties per game this season, worst in the NFL.
The Browns' offense has also not been nearly as explosive as most anticipated, and their defense has been ranked near the bottom of the league for most of the year.
As for Mayfield? He has thrown twice as many interceptions (12) as touchdowns (six) through seven starts.
