Baker Mayfield is still with the Cleveland Browns. Even after the NFL draft and over a month after the Deshaun Watson trade, he is still on the team's roster even as they look for avenues to move on from him.
People around Mayfield thought that the Browns may have treated him poorly on purpose near the end of the season to make separation easier. According to ESPN's Jake Trotter, they believed the Browns sabotaged him in his final appearance of the season, a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to multiple sources, those close to Mayfield — who to that point had missed one game because of his shoulder injury — wondered at the time if the Browns were trying to make Mayfield look as hapless as possible in prime time, to potentially pave the way for the franchise to more easily explain why it might be moving on from him in the offseason.
Mayfield's camp may not know if the Browns planned it, but they can't stand it either way. Mayfield played through serious pain this past season and was told he was too immature to be the Browns' quarterback. Although the former top overall pick has not been very good, replacing him with Watson after claiming to want someone more mature is a huge slap in the face.
The Mayfield situation is a thorn in Cleveland's side that the franchise must set straight. The Browns remain adamant about trading him and getting rid of his contract. It will be a very tough sell, as so many teams have their quarterback vacancies dealt with.
