The Dallas Cowboys have always been a big focus in the football world. That will be true in the 2021 NFL draft, which begins on Thursday night.

From being “America's Team” to getting tons of criticism by other fan bases, the Cowboys always have the media's attention. Dallas had a disappointing season in 2020 as they finished third in the NFC East at a record of 6-10. It didn't help that star quarterback Dak Prescott went down with an ankle fracture-dislocation in week 5 of the season.

While Dak's injury didn't help the Cowboys, the defense was horrible throughout the season. They will need to address the defense in the draft if they hope to compete for a playoff spot next year.

Dallas ranked 23rd in defense this past season and that will not cut it if they are going to be a competitive team. Even with all the electrifying players they have one the offensive side of the ball, they can not win every game in a shootout. Luckily for the Cowboys, this is a very talented draft class and they should be able to bolster their defense.

3. Cowboys get offensive tackle on day two or three

Dallas may have needs on defense but they need to ensure the protection of Dak Prescott. Brady Christensen, Walker Little, or Liam Eichenberg would be good targets for Dallas at offensive tackle. Their offensive line struggled this past season ranking 27th according to PFF. When healthy the Cowboys offensive line is good but they desperately need to get depth at the position. Drafting someone to fill in if injuries occur and eventually start for the team is a pick they need to make.

2. Cowboys take a safety in round two

It's no secret the Cowboys have a horrendous secondary as they ranked 29th according to PFF in the league and they need to address it. With the second round pick Dallas should look no further than the highly skilled safeties in this draft class.

The best safety in the draft class Trevon Moehrig will likely be gone at this point but there are plenty of other great options. Elijah Molden, Jamar Johnson, Richie Grant, and Jevon Holland would all be stellar options for Dallas. They all play very differently at the position but whoever the Cowboys pick will make an immediate impact on the defense.

1. Cowboys take cornerback in round one

Dallas fills their biggest position of need in round one. The Cowboys hold the 10th pick in the draft and the way the board is projected to fall, all of the corners should be available. This pick comes down to two players, Alabama's Patrick Surtain II and South Carolina's Jaycee Horn.

You can't go wrong with either of these corners but if the Cowboys want the best press cover corner Horn is the way to go. While he may get penalized often but he only allowed 8 catches in 24 targets last season. Surtain II is the safer option to go with as his game should easily translate to the NFL. Surtain II was the highest graded corner this past season according to PFF and his grade has gone up every season.

If the Cowboys remain healthy next season and can improve at these positions in the draft, they are set up for success in the next NFL season.
