Reports recently surfaced that Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper had been involved in a shooting. Although the rumor had gone viral, the Dallas Police Department has since dispelled any notion of his involvement.

It appears the fake news had made its way to Cooper himself. He also took to social media to confirm that he is fine, via RJ Ochoa of SB Nation:

It is certainly encouraging to see that Cooper is safe from any harm. Regardless, it raised questions regarding how or why the rumor was spread in the first place.

Fortunately, Cooper has real-life problems to deal with this offseason such as getting his lucrative payday and he does not need any unnecessary distractions that may deter the process. He is set to test the market as a free agent if the Cowboys do not find a way to pay him his due by March 18.

There will certainly be no shortage of interest for the services of a player of Cooper's caliber. The 25-year-old has already made four Pro Bowls. Despite his struggles down the final stretch of the 2019 NFL season, he still managed to finish with 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns as the No. 1 option for quarterback Dak Prescott.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas set the standard last offseason by becoming the highest-paid player at his position by singing a five-year, $100 million contract extension that included $61 million guaranteed.

It is safe to say that Dallas will have plenty of work to do if they hope to secure Cooper and Prescott for the long haul.
