The Dallas Cowboys have been riding high over the last several weeks currently on a five-game winning streak that has put them in the driver seat to earn both a playoff berth and the NFC East division title.
During this stretch, it has seen quarterback Dak Prescott step up his play as he put together his best outing of the season in the 29-23 win over the Philadelphia Eagles as he completed 42-of-54 passes for 455 yards with three touchdowns to three interceptions. This featured him posting the highest number of completions in a single game this season this year and as Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk pointed out that it nearly set the NFL all-time mark.
This is how under the radar it was: The NFL and Cowboys even overlooked it.
“It doesn’t necessarily boggle my mind from our end,” Prescott said. “Just saying how that game turned out, how that ending was going back and forth, both offenses caught fire, and we needed to throw the ball, and we needed to do that to win. To say it’s a NFL high [this season] is surprising. To see the yards and the stats I see out there every week from these guys, that’s kind of mind boggling.”
Prescott’s 42 completions bettered Tony Romo’s team record of 41 completions against the Giants on Dec. 6, 2009. Only six quarterbacks in NFL history have completed more passes in a game than Prescott, led by the 45 completions Drew Bledsoe had for the Patriots in a Nov. 13, 1994, game against the Vikings.
This is an impressive mark for Prescott as there have been plenty of constant questions about whether he could lead a team behind his arm. He had demonstrated that against the Eagles with his best outing of the season while showing he can step up in crucial moments to push his team to a huge win.
Granted, he had the benefit of throwing to Amari Cooper, who had 217 receiving yards on catches with three touchdowns in the contest. Cooper has been a game-changing addition to the team stepping in firmly as the No.1 receiving option in the passing game, which has significantly helped Prescott elevate his play to the next level.
The Cowboys have an opportunity in front of them to not only secure a playoff spot but possibly make a serious push to the Super Bowl where Prescott's play will be largely indicative of how far his team can go.
