One of the more head-scratching decisions from Sunday's slate of games was Jason Garrett deciding to punt in overtime on a 4th and one when they were only 10 yards away from field goal range.
The Cowboys were facing a 4th and one on the Houston Texans 42-yard line and instead of going for it and trying to get the one yard and march closer to field goal range, they kicked the ball back to the Texans.
The Texans drove down the field and kicked a field goal to win the game and drop the Cowboys to 2-3 on the season. After the game, Garrett tried to defend his decision saying it was a long yard, and he wanted to pin the Texans deep.
“Yeah, it was a long one [yard],” the Garrett said via NFL.com. “You know, we had a third-and-2 and we didn't make much on it and we just felt like at that point in the game, the way our defense was playing, the idea was to pin them down there. Chris [Jones] did a great job with the punt. They got the ball on the 10-yard line and hopefully you make a stop and you win the game coming back the other way with a game-winning field goal.”
The Cowboys have Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield, one of the best running backs in the league and it's a bit shocking that Garrett doesn't trust him to get one yard.
The punt would have made more sense when the overtime was 15 minutes long, but with overtime being only ten minutes this year, it's hard for an offense to get more than one possession and the team needs to take advantage of the one they have.
