It goes without saying that the 2017 NFL season was a rather disappointing one for the Dallas Cowboys. One of the biggest takeaways from their tumultuous year was the lackluster performance of quarterback Dak Prescott.

As a result, there has been plenty of speculation regarding Prescott's status as the franchise quarterback in Dallas. However, head coach Jason Garrett is pleased with the progress Prescott has made this offseason, via Stefan Stephenson of the Star-Telegram:

“I think the thing that stands out most to us is what we saw right from the outset,” Garrett said. “His leadership, his ability to take charge and the approach that he takes each and every day. Not only just offensive guys but guys on the defensive side of the ball and the kicking game as well.”

Prescott established himself as one of the most promising, young quarterbacks in the league following a stellar rookie campaign. Unfortunately, he was unable to follow up on his spectacular season after falling victim to the dreaded sophomore slump. The 2018 NFL season is shaping up to be a bit of a deciding year amidst his looming contract negotiations.

Prescott's poor performance can be attributed to a number of factors. His troubles began when running back Ezekiel Elliott was finally forced to serve a six-game suspension he had been fighting since the year started. Zero run game and a lack of chemistry with his wideouts ultimately resulted in him finishing with 3,324 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions as Dallas missed the playoffs.

There seems to be plenty of optimism that Prescott will be able to bounce back strong this season. However, he will certainly have his work cut out for him with the Cowboys' new makeshift receiving corps at his disposal.
