The Dallas Cowboys were originally set to enter 2019 with high expectations, but Ezekiel Elliott's holdout has thrown a wrench into those plans. But the show must go on, and the Cowboys are set to open up their preseason against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night.

As for how head coach Jason Garrett is feeling about the team right now? Well, at the moment, he isn't too confident:

“We’re just a long way off,” said Garrett, according to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News.

To be fair, this could just be typical coach speak, as generally, coaches do not want to set the bar too high in order to avoid a letdown, but saying that the club is “a long way off” just doesn't sound too good.

Of course, with Elliott holding out, the Cowboys are missing the centerpiece of their offense, and without him, they probably are not Super Bowl contenders. Elliott seems perfectly fine with sitting through the regular season, Le'Veon Bell style, and the chatter is that he will not return unless he and Dallas can strike a deal.

The Cowboys apparently do have an offer on the table for Elliott, but it doesn't appear to be to the 24-year-old's liking.

Dallas is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which it won 10 games and captured the NFC East division title. The Cowboys then went on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, good for their third playoff win since 1997.

They then proceeded to fall to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round a week later.
