Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett says that his team will continue to rely on offensive coordinator Scott Linehan to call their plays. There were lofty expectations for the Cowboys coming into this year, just like every other season, but America's team struggled to score in their 16-8 Week 1 loss to the Carolina Panthers, despite having the talents of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot at their disposal.
From ESPN's Todd Archer (via ProFootballTalk):
“I have a tremendous amount of faith in Scott,” Garrett said. “We just have to do a better job collectively as a staff and as an offensive unit to help us move the football and score some points. That starts with basic execution, play after play not beating ourselves and then finding ways to generate some big plays.”
Prescott won Offensive Rookie of the Year in his first year, but he took a step back in his second season and only threw for 170 yards in Week 1. While he didn't throw any interceptions, he didn't throw any touchdowns either.
Elliot led the NFL in rushing as a rookie, totaling 1,631 yards in his first season with the Cowboys. Last season, Elliot dealt with legal woes and was only able to appear in 10 regular-season games, though he still finished 10th in rushing yards. However, he was bottled up for only 69 rushing yards and a score against Carolina.
The Cowboys will take on the New York Giants in Week 2. They'll need Linehan to call up something special to put more points on the board and outscore Odell Beckham Jr., Saquon Barkley and Co. in a Week 2 divisional matchup.
