Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is entering the final year of his contract and owner Jerry Jones has no interest in talking about what he might have to do to earn an extension. When asked about the contract Jones joked that he didn't hear the question because of the practice going on behind them.

“What did you say?” Jones said, joking via ESPN. “I really didn't hear you. I really didn't hear you. There's a drill going on back over there. Next question.”

Jones did make it clear that he does want Garrett to be the Cowboys head coach for a long time, but he still needs to earn that next contract.

“There's no secret that the guy to my right here, I want to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for as long as I'm around to spell it,” Jones said. “That would be my goal — and that's no secret, and many of you have written about it in various ways, so let's see what's ahead.”

The Cowboys didn't approach Garrett this offseason about a contract extension, which is very telling about how they feel about Garrett. Even though Jones wants Garrett to continue to be the coach, he is going to need to prove that he deserves that, and some think that might mean the team needs to make the Super Bowl. Last season the Cowboys went 10-6 but were bounced in the playoffs and the expectations are even higher this season.

This isn't a story that is going to be going away anytime soon, so expect more questions as the weeks go on.
