The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new head coach, and they have a pretty big name on their radar.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mike McCarthy is headed to Dallas to speak with the Cowboys about their head-coaching vacancy.

While Dallas has not yet announced any decision on Jason Garrett, Rapoport notes that the club is expected to move on from him.

Remember: Garrett's contract is up, so the Cowboys don't have to fire him. They have to opt not to sign him to a new deal if they choose to go in a different direction.

McCarthy has been out of football for a year, but he is an established commodity.

He spent nearly 13 seasons as head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006 through 2018, going 125-77-2 during the regular season and 10-8 in the playoffs.

McCarthy's shining moment came during the 2010-11 campaign when he led the Packers to a Super Bowl title.

Green Bay also won six NFC North division titles during McCarthy's tenure and logged double-digit victories eight times, including a 15-win season back in 2011-12.

However, after going 4-7-1 through the first 12 games of last season, McCarthy was fired.

The Packers' decision to let McCarthy go was not only due to the fact that Green Bay missed the playoffs in 2017 and 2018, but was also rooted in his tenuous relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

While McCarthy may be viewed as a headstrong coach by some, he may be just the spark the Cowboys need to get back on track.

Dallas went just 8-8 in 2019.
