Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman recently gave his two cents about the ongoing saga between the team and its current superstar quarterback Dak Prescott. According to the 3-time Super Bowl champion, the Cowboys brass would have a hard time convincing the 27-year-old signal-caller of re-signing with the team.

“I think the price tag went up. I think Dak’s leverage went up after this year,’’ Aikman told David Moore of the Dallas Morning News on Friday.

“They’re not going to get very far without a franchise quarterback,’’ he added.

Most pundits are already predicting that the Cowboys will not be able to bring Dak Prescott back with the franchise tag for a second straight year. Dallas already exercised this option on the two-time Pro-Bowler with a one-year deal worth $31.4 million for the 2020 season.

Troy Aikman is among those skeptical of the Cowboys' chances of retaining Prescott and expects him to play in a different jersey by next season.

“I’d be really surprised if [Prescott] is playing under the franchise tag again this year. My guess is if he is, that will be the last we see of Dak Prescott [in Dallas],” he said. “I just can’t imagine that he’s going to feel really good giving an open negotiation to the Cowboys if he’s played two years under the franchise tag”.

The NFL's franchise tag rule applies to players slated to become an unrestricted free agent. If certain conditions are met, this allows NFL teams to bind the player for one more year.

Dak Prescott, meanwhile, is already getting significant interest from other teams, especially with the current quarterback shuffle happening in the offseason so far.
