The New York Giants had a perfect opportunity to find the eventual successor to quarterback Eli Manning this year. They had the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft and a host of highly-rated quarterbacks to choose from. However, they passed on that chance to take running back Saquon Barkley, in part because they believed Manning is still capable of playing at a high level.
The 37-year-old Manning is grateful for the trust the team has shown in him with that move and plans to prove this season that they made the right decision to stick with him.
“It was kind of a vote of confidence in that they trusted in me that I can play at a high level, can win games, take us deep in playoffs and win championships and win championships still,” Manning said on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s The Opening Drive. “And you know what? I want to prove them right and I want to make them look smart and make them to have made the right decision in doing that. I want to go out there and do great things, do my job and lead this team and make guys around me better and do what I’m supposed to do to put us in position to win those games.”
The Giants have put Manning in a great position to succeed this season. They upgraded his offensive line with left tackle Nate Solder and rookie guard Will Hernandez. They got him another playmaker in Barkley, who will hopefully give the Giants a much-needed running game. And Odell Beckham Jr. is set to return and lead a talented receiving corps that also features Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram.
Obviously, Manning must still do his part and utilize all those weapons at his disposal. If he can successfully do that, the Giants should be pretty good this season, not to mention justified for keeping faith in Eli.
