Mark Murphy and the Green Bay Packers have successfully hired the 15th head coach in franchise history. After making the tough decision to fire Mike McCarthy in the middle of the season after an embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the Packers have brought in a young offensive head coach.
Those who hadn't heard much about Matt LaFleur prior to his first press conference absolutely loved what he had to say. He talked about holding players accountable, playing as a team, and winning championships. What more can a fan base ask for from a head coach?
Also in the press conference was a surprising admission from team CEO Murphy, who said that the team felt there was a lot of “complacency” from both the players and coaches prior to McCarthy's firing.
In a report shared by Pro Football Talk, Murphy talked about the coaching search group wanting a guy that would hold everyone accountable and not let things go as far as McCarthy did.
“They wanted someone who would hold the players accountable. They felt a complacency had set in among some players and coaches. . . . Is there something we could do to shake people up so they don’t have the complacency?”
LaFleur is certainly the man for the job. He is a no-nonsense kind of head coach and he has a strong voice in the locker room. There is also no question that he is the type of guy that can handle the media the right way and has a certain charm when speaking in front of cameras.
Now, the question will become, can LaFleur work well with Aaron Rodgers? Can he help the superstar quarterback get back to playing at an MVP caliber level.
If he can, the future is bright in Green Bay and the playoffs should be a very reasonable expectation for 2019.
