The Green Bay Packers were one of the most active teams on trade deadline day as they sent safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and running back Ty Montgomery packing in exchange for draft picks. But with those deals more focused on the future, there’s an impression that the Packers might be packing it in for this season.

However, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has pushed back on this perception and says that his decisions were made with the team’s long- and short-term interests at heart.

“I don't necessarily think there's a message it sends to the locker room,” Gutekunst said per Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “I think the decisions that we make are always in the best interest of our team, not only in the short term, but the long term, as well. But I think our locker room knows where we're headed and, like I said, I think we're humming at the right time and I think there's a lot of positive things going forward.”

Despite the Packers’ disappointing 3-3-1 record through the first half of the season, they are still in the race to win the very tight NFC North. So while trading away both Clinton-Dix and Montgomery figures to make them a little bit worse in the short term, they still have a good shot at making it back to the playoffs.

Moreover, trading away Clinton-Dix, whom they seemingly didn’t plan on re-signing to a new deal this offseason, appears to be the right move in the long term. It gives them another pick to help improve the team and make a much better run next season.
