When the Green Bay Packers drafted Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, many thought the team would be transitioning to the post-Aaron Rodgers era sooner rather than later. Fast forward two years later–and entering Year 3–Rodgers is still the man under center for Green Bay with Love still backing him up.

That's not really a knock on Love's ability. He just hasn't gotten the opportunity to showcase what he can do and develop confidence playing behind Rodgers, who put up back-to-back MVP seasons. For real, it's hard to get any starting opportunity behind the best and most valuable player in the NFL.

With that, however, many are growing concerned whether Love can truly take over from Rodgers when the time comes. Packers CEO Mark Murphy didn't go as far as to answering those questions, but he did note that this offseason will be crucial for the 23-year-old QB to prove that he can be a franchise cornerstone for the future.

“I think this preseason is important for him,” Murphy said during an interview with Tom Grossi of Packast, per Pro Football Talk. “We think he can be a good player, but we haven’t really seen enough. So I think this preseason will be good for him.

The Packers did emphasize their belief on Jordan Love's talents. After all, they wouldn't draft him in the first round as heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers if they didn't see anything special. Nonetheless, it is up for the youngster to make the most of the opportunity he gets–whether that is impressing during practice or being ready when his number is called.

“He’s a talented player. I know the decision to draft him has been questioned by a number of people, but it’s such an important position in our league that investing future assets at the position. … They said the same thing when we drafted Aaron,” Murphy furthered.

Love has only played in six games in his career and started in one. He has already thrown two touchdowns, but the opportunity to have live-game experience just wasn't there. With Rodgers returning to the Packers for 2022, he can't do anything but stay patient and be ready. Hopefully, his time comes.
