The Green Bay Packers escaped with a narrow win over their NFC North rivals, the Minnesota Vikings, on Sunday. One reason was the contribution of running back Aaron Jones. Rookie head coach Matt LaFleur was complimentary of Jones' game.
Per The Athletic's Matt Schneidman on Twitter:
“He did an unbelievable job. He was our player of the game on offense.”
The 24-year-old Jones had a heckuva game yesterday. Jones, a third-year rusher out of UTEP, collected 116 yards on the ground on 23 carries, scoring one touchdown. Jones also helped out franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers by hauling in four receptions for 34 yards.
The Packers won their home-opening 2019 regular-season tilt by a five-point margin with the help of the talented Jones and two touchdown throws from the 35-year-old Rodgers. Green Bay is now 2-0 on the season—along with eight other NFL franchises—and succeeded in the team's early-season test with back-to-back divisional matchups to kickoff the 2019 season.
Green Bay escaped a late touchdown from Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs—a 45-yard reception from Kirk Cousins in the fourth quarter, which brought the Pack's leading margin to single digits. However, the Packers' three touchdowns, including Jones' score and 100-plus rushing day, were sufficient to hold Minnesota in check in spite of 16 unanswered points.
Jones was selected in fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by Green Bay, starting only four games in his rookie season before doubling that last season and rushing for over 700 yards in 2018.
Next week the Packers and Matt LaFleur face an AFC foe in the Joe Flacco-led Denver Broncos, losers of a last-second long field goal on Sunday to the Chicago Bears.
