Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Sunday that the team is “still working through” linebacker Oren Burks' injury, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. Burks, 24, suffered a pectoral muscle tear in the team's opening preseason game.

Schneidman also offers the note that general manager Brian Gutekunst is “looking at outside options” as well, further speculating that Burks' injury could be very serious and stretch deep into the regular season.

Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the second-year inside linebacker would have started alongside Blake Martinez in the Packers' defense.

Burks, a third-round pick in 2018, was expected to start next to Blake Martinez in the middle of the 3-4 defense. Burks played only 122 snaps as a rookie but was slowed by a shoulder injury in his rookie preseason. Burks missed the first two games of the 2018 season while recovering.

Green Bay selected Burks in the third round of last year's draft. The 6-foot-3, 233-pound linebacker spent four seasons with the Vanderbilt Commodores in the SEC before declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft.

Burks recorded 24 combined tackles in 14 games during his rookie season with the Pack, including four starts.

Additionally, Schneidman says Green Bay's front office “likes what they have in” seventh-round pickup Ty Summers, undrafted free agent Curtis Bolton, and second-year linebacker James Crawford.

The Packers last season gave up the 11th-most rushing yards to opposing offenses. Also, the team was tied for the fifth-highest number of sacks recorded.
