The Green Bay Packers made the decision to fire head coach Mike McCarthy following their embarrassing loss at home against the Arizona Cardinals this week. It was a sobering moment for the franchise and management has realized that they simply cannot afford to continue down the path that they have been on over the past few seasons.

Now, the pressure is on for Green Bay to find a replacement that is better than McCarthy. There have been quite a few names mentioned as potential candidates, but one name in particular seems a bit far-fetched and intriguing.

USA Today believes that the Packers should target New England Patriots' offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, along with another candidate. That candidate is former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell.

Unlike McDaniels, Caldwell has a proven track record guiding franchises. In seven seasons as a head coach, Caldwell went 62-50 with four playoff appearances. His Colts reached the AFC Championship in 2009. He also has two Super Bowl rings from his time as an offensive coordinator in Indianapolis and Baltimore.

In the article, Caldwell's ability to work with his quarterbacks also was a major reason for why the Packers should have interest in him. Finding a coach that can work with Aaron Rodgers is a major key.

Coaches who have worked with Caldwell say he has a keen ability to comprehend what a quarterback does best and then elevate the player's game even further. He doesn’t try to reinvent his passers, a trait that Rodgers should find appealing.

Caldwell would certainly be an intriguing option for the Packers. He may not be exactly what fans in Green Bay are wanting, but he does have a good track record. That being said, the teams he has coached were fed up with him in a big way prior to his firing.

Green Bay is going to be an extremely attractive landing spot for free agent coaches. Other names that have come up as potential candidates are Bruce Arians, Jim Harbaugh, Lincoln Riley, John Defilippo, and possibly even John Harbaugh if he is fired by the Baltimore Ravens.

No matter who the Packers end up hiring, they cannot afford to miss with this hire. Rodgers is not going to get any younger.
