The Houston Texans are coming off a rough season that saw them finish 4-13. Rookie head coach David Culley had his work cut out for him in 2021, not having much to work with in terms of talent on the Texans' roster. Amid the flurry of NFL coaches getting fired on “Black Monday,” Culley's job was one that came into question. Well, fans will have to wait a bit longer for official word on a decision regarding Culley's future. Per Albert Breer, Culley told reporters that he is still the Texans head coach “as far as he knows.”

Culley revealed that there has been no meeting scheduled between him and owner Cal McNair, nor between him and GM Nick Caserio to discuss his future with the organization. While rumors and speculation over his job status run rampant, Culley is in an unfortunate position where his best bet is simply to wait and see.

While the Texans' 2021 season can be considered a disappointment, Culley was given a less than favorable task when inheriting the head coaching role in Houston. Amid the turmoil stemming from sexual assault allegations against Deshaun Watson, Culley was able to step in and (somewhat) steady a sinking ship.

The impressive play of Davis Mills, who has a real case to be considered the best rookie quarterback of 2021 apart from Mac Jones, bodes well for Culley's retention, though there weren't too many other positives to take away from the season. Ultimately, Culley is just as clueless as we are when it comes to his job security, and hopefully McNair and Caserio can offer some clarity in that regard before long.
