Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson thanked star defensive tackle J.J. Watt for his friendship after the three-time Defensive Player of the Year announced Friday he and the franchise were parting ways.

Watson hailed Watt as one of the greatest players in league history, also lauding his character in addition to his play.

“Salute to one of the Greatest of All Time,” Watson wrote on Twitter on Friday morning. “I appreciate you for all the work you put in and more importantly the person you are.”

Watt's future in Houston had been a talking point throughout the 2020 season. He had verbal disputes with former head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien and openly questioned the direction of the franchise.

Texans owner Cal McNair said Friday the organization wanted to do right by Watt and ensure he had options moving forward.

As for Watson, McNair said there has been “misinformation” regard to the quarterback's trade demands, reiterating the team fully intends to keep him under center through 2021 and beyond:

“There is a lot of misinformation out there, I’ll leave it at that,” McNair said, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. “Today we want on focus on J.J. Deshaun is our quarterback, he is a Texan, and we expect him to remain a Texan, and we’ll leave that.”

Houston seems to be stuck somewhere between a rebuild and still trying to contend in the near future.

It is unknown whether Watson will eventually follow Watt out of Houston or not, but the star signal-caller took the time to thank his friend for their years together.
